Space Rockets, Rain forests, and a Slice of France in South America

Best Time to Travel:
Go between August and November for the driest weather and best conditions for exploring the rainforest or watching a rocket launch. February to April is Carnival season and full of color—but also rain.
Why French Guiana Rocks:
French Guiana is South America’s most unexpected twist—a slice of Europe draped in thick jungle. Technically an overseas department of France, it blends Creole, Indigenous, French, and Brazilian cultures with wild Amazonian nature and space-age science.
Kourou & the Space Centre:
Home to the Guiana Space Centre, this is where Europe launches its rockets. You can book a guided tour and, if your timing is right, even witness a launch. It’s science nerd heaven in the middle of the tropics.
Cayenne:
The capital feels like a mash-up of Creole culture, French cafés, colonial architecture, and buzzing markets. Don’t miss out on the seafood, spicy Creole dishes, and local rhum punch.
Devil’s Island:
Part of the Îles du Salut, this former penal colony once held France’s most notorious prisoners (yes, Papillon was real). It’s haunting, beautiful, and eerily quiet now—a boat ride away from Kourou.
Rainforest + Wildlife:
Much of the country is dense Amazon rainforest, teeming with wildlife. Think jaguars, giant otters, caimans, and hundreds of bird species. You can book eco-tours with local guides or stay in jungle lodges for a full nature immersion.
Carnival Season:
French Guiana’s Carnaval is one of the most unique in the world—blending French masquerade traditions with Afro-Caribbean rhythms and rebellious energy. It’s a spectacle of music, dance, and elaborate costumes.
